How to Become a Scrum Master in 2026

The Scrum Master is one of the fastest-growing roles in technology and product organisations. As companies adopt agile at scale, the demand for skilled Scrum Masters who can facilitate teams, remove impediments, and coach agile practices has surged — with salaries to match. Scrum Master demand is growing at more than double the rate of general IT roles as companies accelerate agile adoption across engineering, product, and operations

Step-by-Step Path

  1. 1

    Understand Scrum fundamentals

    2–4 weeks

Before pursuing certification, spend 2–4 weeks getting comfortable with the Scrum Guide. Learn the three pillars (transparency, inspection, adaptation), the five events (Sprint, Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Retrospective), and the three accountabilities (Product Owner, Scrum Master, Developers).

  2. 2

    Attend a CSM® training course

    2 days

Scrum Alliance requires you to attend a 2-day live CSM® course delivered by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST). This is mandatory — you cannot sit the exam without it. The course combines theory with exercises and simulations that prepare you for both the exam and the real role.

  3. 3

    Pass the CSM® online exam

    3–7 days

After the course, Scrum Alliance gives you access to the online exam. It's 50 multiple-choice questions and you need 37 correct (74%) to pass. You get two attempts included in the course fee. Most candidates pass after reviewing their course materials for a few days.

  4. 4

Accept the Scrum Alliance licence agreement

    1 day

Once you pass, accept the licence agreement and set up your Scrum Alliance membership. Your CSM® credential is valid for two years and includes a Scrum Alliance membership.

  5. 5

    Gain hands-on experience

    Ongoing

Start applying Scrum in your current role or seek entry-level Scrum Master positions. Experience facilitating daily stand-ups, retrospectives, and sprint planning is what employers look for beyond the certification.

  6. 6

    Advance to A-CSM® and CSP-SM®

    1–2 years

Once you have real-world experience, Scrum Alliance's advanced credentials (A-CSM® and CSP-SM®) significantly increase your earning potential and open doors to Agile Coach and RTE roles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CSM worth it in 2026?

Yes. CSM is one of the most recognised agile credentials globally, with over 1.5 million certified holders. It's widely required in tech company job listings and significantly improves both employability and salary — especially when combined with hands-on Scrum experience.

How long does the CSM course take?

The mandatory CSM training is a 2-day live course (in-person or online). Combined with pre-reading and post-course exam preparation, most candidates complete the full process in 2–4 weeks.

Can a non-technical person become a Scrum Master?

Absolutely. Many of the most effective Scrum Masters come from non-technical backgrounds — business analysis, HR, operations, and even teaching. The role is about facilitation, coaching, and process — not writing code.

What is the difference between CSM and PSM?

CSM (Certified ScrumMaster) is from Scrum Alliance and requires a 2-day live training course. PSM (Professional Scrum Master) is from Scrum.org and is self-study based. CSM tends to be more widely recognised in North America; PSM is popular in Europe. Both are respected credentials.

What is the career path after Scrum Master?

The most common progression is: Scrum Master → Senior Scrum Master → Agile Coach → Release Train Engineer (RTE). Some Scrum Masters move into Product Owner roles to develop their product skills. Senior Scrum Masters with SAFe credentials often become Enterprise Agile Coaches, which is one of the highest-paid agile roles available.

How many teams does a Scrum Master support?

New Scrum Masters typically support one team. Experienced practitioners often support two to three teams simultaneously. Beyond that, the focus shifts to Agile Coach or RTE responsibilities, which involve coaching multiple teams rather than serving them directly.

Is Scrum Master a management role?

Scrum Masters are not traditional managers — they have no authority over team members' salaries, performance reviews, or assignments. Instead, they lead through influence, facilitation, and coaching. This servant-leadership model is what distinguishes the role and makes it effective in agile organisations.

Can Scrum Masters work remotely?

Yes. Scrum Master is one of the most remote-friendly roles in tech. Online facilitation tools like Miro and Mural make retrospectives and sprint ceremonies work well distributed. Many Scrum Masters work fully remote for US and European tech companies, often earning higher salaries than equivalent on-site roles.
