Project Management
Work Breakdown Structure
Quick Definition
A hierarchical decomposition of the total scope of work to be carried out by the project team to accomplish project objectives and create required deliverables.
Detailed Explanation
The WBS breaks down the project scope into smaller, manageable components called work packages. Each work package can be estimated, scheduled, monitored, and controlled independently.
The WBS is the foundation for project planning — schedule, cost, resource, and risk planning all build upon it. The 100% rule states that the WBS must capture 100% of the work defined in the project scope.
In PMP® methodology, creating the WBS is a key process in the Scope Management knowledge area. It transforms the project scope statement into a structured, hierarchical view of all project work.
