How Long Does It Take to Get CSM Certified?
The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) is one of the fastest professional certifications you can earn. Unlike multi-month preparation marathons like the PMP or CISSP, the CSM can be completed in a single weekend — and many professionals receive their certificate within days of finishing the course.
But "how long does it take" depends on which part of the process you're asking about. Here's the complete timeline, broken down step by step.
Step 1: The Training Course (2 Days)
The Scrum Alliance requires all CSM candidates to complete a 16-hour (2-day) in-person or live online course taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST). There are no shortcuts — you cannot self-study your way to a CSM.
Most providers, including CertScope, deliver the training over a weekend (Saturday and Sunday, typically 9 AM–5 PM each day). This makes it accessible for working professionals without taking time off.
What you'll cover in the two days:
- Scrum theory, values, and principles
- Scrum roles: ScrumMaster, Product Owner, Developers
- Scrum events: Sprint, Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Retrospective
- Scrum artifacts: Product Backlog, Sprint Backlog, Increment
- Definition of Done and acceptance criteria
- Facilitation techniques and coaching skills for ScrumMasters
Step 2: The Online Exam (Takes ~1 Hour to Complete)
After completing the course, you receive an email from Scrum Alliance with a link to take the CSM exam online. You have 90 days to complete it after your course ends, but most people take it within a week while the material is fresh.
The exam itself:
- 50 questions (multiple choice)
- 60 minutes to complete
- Passing score: 74% (37 out of 50 correct)
- Two free retakes if you don't pass the first time
The CSM exam is open-book — you can have the Scrum Guide open while you take it. That said, speed matters, so you shouldn't rely on looking everything up.
Step 3: Accepting the License Agreement (Immediate)
After passing the exam, you need to accept the Scrum Alliance license agreement and complete your Scrum Alliance profile. This takes about 10 minutes.
Step 4: Receiving Your Certificate (Instant to 2 Days)
Once you've accepted the license agreement, your CSM credential is active immediately. Scrum Alliance sends your certificate digitally — you can download it, add it to LinkedIn, and start using the CSM designation right away.
There is no waiting period, no additional verification, and no third party you need to notify. The credential is live the moment you complete the agreement.

How Hard Is the CSM Exam?
The CSM exam has a pass rate of around 95–98%. The vast majority of candidates who attend the full 2-day course pass on their first attempt without any additional study. The questions focus on the Scrum Guide and scenarios covered during the training.
If you pay attention during the training, you will likely pass without needing to study separately. However, reviewing the Scrum Guide the night before doesn't hurt.
How Long Does CSM Stay Valid?
Your CSM credential is valid for 2 years. To renew, you need to:
- Earn 20 SEUs (Scrum Education Units) within 2 years
- Pay the renewal fee ($100 for Scrum Alliance members)
SEUs can be earned through online courses, attending Scrum events, coaching, or contributing to the Scrum community.
