Change Enablement
Quick Definition
The practice of ensuring that risks are properly assessed, changes are authorised, and the change schedule is managed to maximise successful service and product changes.
Detailed Explanation
Change enablement (formerly change management in ITIL® v3) controls the lifecycle of all changes to minimise disruption while enabling beneficial changes to be made quickly. It categorises changes into standard, normal, and emergency types, each with different authorisation and assessment processes.
The Change Advisory Board (CAB) plays a key role in assessing and authorising normal changes, while standard changes are pre-authorised and emergency changes follow an expedited process. The change schedule provides visibility into planned changes.
Effective change enablement balances speed with risk — enabling innovation while protecting service stability.
