CMDB
Quick Definition
Configuration Management Database — a repository that stores information about all Configuration Items (CIs) and their relationships within the IT infrastructure.
Detailed Explanation
The CMDB is the backbone of IT service management. It maintains a logical model of the IT infrastructure by recording CIs (servers, applications, network devices, databases) and the relationships between them — dependencies, interfaces, and ownership.
A well-maintained CMDB enables impact analysis (what breaks if this server goes down?), change risk assessment, and faster incident resolution. However, CMDB accuracy is a common challenge — manual data entry leads to drift between the database and reality.
Modern approaches use automated discovery, agent-based scanning, and infrastructure-as-code to keep the CMDB current. The term 'Configuration Management System' (CMS) in ITIL® refers to the broader set of tools and databases that make up the full picture.
