Kanban
Quick Definition
A visual workflow management method that focuses on continuous flow, limiting work in progress, and optimising the flow of value through the system.
Detailed Explanation
Kanban uses a visual board with columns representing workflow stages (e.g., To Do, In Progress, Review, Done). Cards represent work items and move across the board as they progress. WIP limits on each column prevent overloading and reveal bottlenecks.
Unlike Scrum, Kanban doesn't prescribe fixed iterations, roles, or ceremonies. It's a pull-based system — new work is pulled only when capacity is available. This makes it well-suited for support, maintenance, and continuous delivery environments.
Kanban metrics include lead time (total time from request to delivery), cycle time (time in active work), throughput (items completed per time period), and cumulative flow diagrams.
