Maturity Model
Quick Definition
A framework that describes the progression of an organisation's capabilities from initial/ad-hoc levels to optimised/continuous improvement levels.
Detailed Explanation
Maturity models provide a roadmap for organisational improvement. Most use five levels: Initial (ad-hoc), Repeatable (basic processes), Defined (standardised), Managed (measured), and Optimising (continuous improvement).
Common maturity models include CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) for software development, ITIL's Process Maturity Framework, and COBIT's Capability Model.
Maturity assessments help organisations understand their current state, set improvement targets, and prioritise investment. The goal isn't always to reach the highest level — the right maturity level depends on the organisation's context and risk appetite.
