Service Continuity Management

Quick Definition

The practice of ensuring that the availability and performance of a service is maintained at sufficient levels in case of a disaster.

Detailed Explanation

Service continuity management prepares for and responds to events that could significantly disrupt service delivery — natural disasters, cyber attacks, infrastructure failures, or pandemics. Key activities include Business Impact Analysis (BIA), risk assessment, developing continuity plans, testing those plans regularly, and maintaining recovery capabilities. Recovery strategies range from cold standby to hot standby to active-active configurations. Recovery Time Objective (RTO) defines how quickly service must be restored, while Recovery Point Objective (RPO) defines the maximum acceptable data loss.
