How Many Questions Are on the PMP Exam?

The PMP exam contains 180 total questions, but only 175 are scored. The remaining 5 are pretest questions that PMI uses to evaluate new questions for future exams. You won't know which questions are pretest, so treat every question as if it counts.

Question Distribution by Domain

Domain% of ExamApproximate Questions
People42%~74 questions
Process50%~88 questions
Business Environment8%~13 questions

Key takeaway: People + Process account for 92% of the exam. Business Environment is important but shouldn't consume disproportionate study time.

PMP Question Types Explained

The 2026 PMP exam uses five question types — not just traditional multiple choice:

1. Multiple Choice (Single Answer)

The most common type. Four options, one correct answer.

Example: A project manager discovers a critical risk during execution. What should they do FIRST? A) Update the risk register B) Notify the sponsor C) Assess the risk impact D) Implement a workaround

2. Multiple Response (Select All That Apply)

Choose 2–3 correct answers from 4–6 options. The question specifies how many to select.

3. Matching

Drag items from one column to match items in another. Tests knowledge of relationships (e.g., matching processes to knowledge areas).

4. Hotspot

Click on a specific area of an image or diagram to answer the question (e.g., identifying a phase on a project lifecycle diagram).

5. Fill-in-the-Blank

Type a numeric answer — typically for formula-based questions like EVM calculations.

Exam tip: Practice all five question types during preparation. Many candidates are surprised by matching and hotspot questions on exam day.

What Is the PMP Passing Score?

PMI uses a scaled scoring methodology and does not publish a fixed passing score. Here's what we know:

  • The estimated passing threshold is approximately 60% (around 106 correct out of 175 scored questions)
  • PMI uses psychometric analysis to account for question difficulty variation across exam forms
  • Your score report shows performance as Above Target, Target, Below Target, or Needs Improvement for each domain
  • You receive a pass/fail result immediately on screen after completing the exam

How to Interpret Your Score Report

RatingMeaning
Above TargetStrong performance — well above the passing threshold
TargetCompetent performance — met the passing standard
Below TargetWeak performance — below the passing standard
Needs ImprovementSignificant gaps — requires additional study

If you fail, the score report shows which domains need improvement so you can focus your restudy.

PMP Exam Break Structure

The 230-minute exam is divided into three sections with two optional breaks:

SectionQuestionsBreak After
Section 1Questions 1–6010-minute break (optional)
Section 2Questions 61–12010-minute break (optional)
Section 3Questions 121–180Exam ends

Important: Break time does NOT count against your 230-minute exam time. Use both breaks — stretch, eat a snack, clear your mind. Returning refreshed improves performance on later questions.

Online Proctored vs Test Centre: Which Should You Choose?

FactorOnline ProctoredPearson VUE Test Centre
LocationHome or officeDesignated test centre
SchedulingMore flexible, often same-weekMay require advance booking
EnvironmentMust be quiet, private roomControlled by test centre

Recommendation: Choose the test centre if you want a controlled environment with scratch paper. Choose online if scheduling flexibility and home comfort are priorities.

How to Prepare for Each Question Type

For Multiple Choice and Multiple Response

  • Practice with 1,000+ questions across all three domains
  • Focus on scenario-based questions — "What should the PM do FIRST/NEXT?"
  • Eliminate obviously wrong answers before selecting

For Matching Questions

  • Memorise process groups and knowledge areas
  • Know which tools and techniques belong to which process
  • Practice drag-and-drop exercises

For Hotspot Questions

  • Study diagrams: project lifecycle, Agile frameworks, network diagrams
  • Be familiar with visual representations of Scrum, Kanban boards, and WBS

For Fill-in-the-Blank (Formula Questions)

  • Memorise EVM formulas: SPI = EV/PV, CPI = EV/AC, EAC = BAC/CPI, ETC = EAC − AC
  • Practice PERT calculations: (O + 4M + P) / 6
  • Know communication channels formula: n(n-1)/2

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the PMP exam?
