PMO Maturity

Quick Definition

A measure of how developed a project management office's processes, governance and capabilities are, usually described in stages.

Detailed Explanation

PMO maturity describes how consistently and effectively a PMO supports delivery. Models usually describe stages from ad hoc practice, where results depend on individuals, to optimising practice, where measurement and learning drive continuous improvement. Assessment considers governance, methods, portfolio management, resourcing, reporting, benefits tracking, people and tools. Higher maturity is not always better. The right level depends on the size and complexity of the organisation and what its leaders need from the PMO. Example: A PMO assessment finds that all projects use a common template and report monthly, but nobody tracks benefits after projects close. The PMO decides to improve benefits tracking next rather than add more templates. Assessing maturity helps a PMO choose improvements that matter rather than copying every best practice. See our PMO maturity guide for assessment questions. A useful assessment collects evidence such as documents, dashboards and examples of decisions, rather than relying only on opinion, and it repeats at a regular interval so progress can be seen over time.
