Agile Release Train

Quick Definition

A long-lived team of Agile teams (typically 50–125 people) that incrementally develops, delivers, and operates one or more solutions in a value stream.

Detailed Explanation

The ART is the primary organisational construct in SAFe® for delivering value at scale. It operates on a fixed cadence of Programme Increments (PIs), typically 8–12 weeks, with each PI starting with a PI Planning event. Key ART roles include the Release Train Engineer (RTE — the ART's Scrum Master), Product Management, System Architect, and Business Owners. Teams within the ART coordinate through Scrum of Scrums, ART Sync, and System Demos. The ART is designed to be a virtual organisation — team members remain in their functional departments but work together on the ART's mission.
