PI Planning
Quick Definition
Programme Increment Planning — a cadence-based, face-to-face event that aligns all teams on an Agile Release Train to a shared mission and plan.
Detailed Explanation
PI Planning is considered the heartbeat of SAFe® and the most important event in the framework. It brings together all ART members (50–125+ people) for 2 days of collaborative planning every 8–12 weeks.
The event includes setting PI objectives, identifying dependencies between teams, committing to the plan, and addressing risks through a confidence vote (fist of five). Management presents the vision and context; teams create their iteration plans.
Effective PI Planning creates alignment, surfaces risks early, builds social connections, and establishes a shared commitment across the entire ART.
