Availability Management
Quick Definition
The practice of ensuring that services deliver agreed levels of availability to meet the needs of customers and users.
Detailed Explanation
Availability management defines, analyses, plans, measures, and improves all aspects of the availability of IT services. Key metrics include percentage uptime, Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF), Mean Time to Repair (MTTR), and Mean Time Between System Incidents (MTBSI).
Availability is measured from the user's perspective — a service is unavailable if the user cannot perform their required business function, even if the underlying infrastructure is technically operational.
High availability design includes redundancy, failover mechanisms, load balancing, and geographic distribution.
