Configuration Management
Quick Definition
The practice of ensuring accurate and reliable information about the configuration of services and the CIs that support them is available when needed.
Detailed Explanation
Configuration management maintains the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) — a repository of all configuration items (CIs) and their relationships. CIs include hardware, software, documentation, services, and any component that needs to be managed.
The CMDB enables other practices — incident management uses it to understand impact, change management uses it to assess risk, and problem management uses it to trace dependencies.
Modern configuration management increasingly uses automated discovery tools and infrastructure-as-code practices to maintain accuracy, reducing reliance on manual data entry.
