Project Management
Gantt Chart
Quick Definition
A horizontal bar chart that illustrates a project schedule, showing tasks, durations, dependencies, milestones, and the current status of each activity.
Detailed Explanation
Gantt charts provide a visual timeline of the project plan. Each task is represented by a horizontal bar whose length corresponds to its duration. Dependencies between tasks are shown as arrows, and milestones appear as diamond markers.
Gantt charts make it easy to identify the critical path, visualise task overlap, track progress, and communicate the schedule to stakeholders. Modern tools like Microsoft Project, Jira, and Monday.com auto-generate Gantt charts.
While Gantt charts are excellent for predictive (waterfall) projects, Agile teams typically prefer Kanban boards, burndown charts, and PI roadmaps.
