ITIL
Quick Definition
Information Technology Infrastructure Library — the world's most widely adopted framework for IT Service Management, currently in version 5.
Detailed Explanation
ITIL provides a set of best practices for planning, delivering, and improving IT services. Originally developed by the UK government in the 1980s, it has evolved through multiple versions: v1, v2, v3/2011, ITIL 4 (2019), and ITIL 5 (2025).
ITIL 5 is built around the Service Value System (SVS), which connects guiding principles, governance, the service value chain, 34 management practices, and continual improvement into a cohesive framework for value creation.
ITIL is framework-agnostic — it works alongside Agile, DevOps, Lean, and cloud-native practices. Over 90% of Fortune 500 companies use ITIL in some form.
