Value Stream
Quick Definition
The series of steps an organisation undertakes to create and deliver products and services to consumers — from demand to value realisation.
Detailed Explanation
A value stream maps the end-to-end flow of work from the initial trigger (customer request, business need) through all activities to the final delivery of value. It reveals bottlenecks, handoffs, delays, and waste.
In SAFe®, value streams are the primary organisational construct — Agile Release Trains are aligned to value streams. In ITIL® 5, value streams traverse the Service Value Chain activities in different patterns depending on the type of work.
Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Lean technique that visualises current and future state value streams to identify improvement opportunities.
