Product Goal
Quick Definition
A long-term objective for a product that the Scrum Team plans against and that guides the Product Backlog.
Detailed Explanation
The Product Goal describes a future state of the product. It is the target against which the team plans, and the Product Backlog emerges to fulfil it. The Scrum Team should fulfil or abandon one goal before taking on the next.
The Product Owner is accountable for developing and communicating the Product Goal. Sprint Goals contribute to it in small steps.
Example: A subscription service sets the Product Goal: reduce the time a new customer takes to start using the product to under a day. Each Sprint Goal then moves one part of that journey forward, such as faster sign-up or clearer onboarding.
A clear Product Goal stops backlogs from becoming wish lists and helps stakeholders understand direction. A common mistake is writing a goal that is really a feature list or a date; a better goal describes an outcome for users or the business, which the team can test against as it learns.
