Sprint Goal

Quick Definition

A single objective for a sprint that gives the Scrum Team a reason for the work and flexibility in how to achieve it.

Detailed Explanation

The Sprint Goal is the one commitment for the Sprint Backlog. It is created during Sprint Planning and explains why the sprint is valuable to stakeholders. Developers choose how to deliver it, and if the work turns out different from expected, they negotiate scope with the Product Owner without endangering the goal. A good Sprint Goal is outcome-focused rather than a list of tasks, and it helps decide what to do when the unexpected happens. Example: A team working on an online shop sets the goal: let a customer check out as a guest. Work items might include a guest form, a payment step and a confirmation email. If the payment step takes longer than expected, the team might simplify the confirmation email to protect the goal. Sprint Goals create focus and coherence. Without one, a sprint can become a bag of unrelated tasks.
